"Addressing the tariff war between the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and China, its violations of NAFTA, and global trade consequences"
The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, plays a crucial role in fostering international economic cooperation and addressing global socioeconomic challenges. In this session, ECOSOC will deliberate on the “Tariff War Between the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and China, Its Violations of NAFTA, and Global Trade Consequences.”
Sparked by the U.S.’s imposition of tariffs on steel, aluminum, and other goods under the guise of national security, this trade conflict has escalated tensions between key global economies. It has triggered retaliatory tariffs and threatened the stability of multilateral trade agreements. Notably, the dispute has raised concerns about breaches of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO), straining long-standing economic alliances.
ECOSOC will examine the economic impacts of this tariff war—ranging from disrupted supply chains and inflation to weakened investor confidence. It will also explore collaborative frameworks to restore fair trade practices, uphold international economic law, and prevent further escalation of trade protectionism.
