"Preventing the militarization of outer space by regulating military activities and arms development beyond Earth"

The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC), the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, is tasked with addressing global challenges to peace and security, particularly those concerning disarmament, arms control, and international security threats. One of the most pressing and futuristic issues on its agenda is “Preventing the Militarization of Outer Space by Regulating Military Activities and Arms Development Beyond Earth.” With rapid advancements in satellite technology, anti-satellite weapons, and the strategic use of space by major powers, outer space is at risk of becoming the next domain of armed conflict.

In response to these emerging threats, DISEC aims to establish international norms and legal frameworks that prevent an arms race in space. Its goal is to protect peaceful scientific exploration and ensure that outer space remains a global commons accessible and beneficial to all humankind.

To achieve this, the committee will examine existing treaties such as the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, assess new developments in military space technology, and explore confidence-building measures. These measures include transparency initiatives and multilateral agreements to prevent the deployment of weapons and military infrastructure in orbit.
